Clemson and Georgia Tech square off in a huge ACC game tonight. Just for fun, I checked out the depth charts for both teams and found some things to write about. (more…)

As a member of the Football Writers Association of America, I receive email newsletters from (among other organizations) the National Football Foundation. Their latest email letter contains gobs of info about college football TV ratings from the 2008 season. Of particular interest to me is how little of a factor the ACC is/was in the televised college football landscape last year. With the renegotiation of the ACC’s TV contracts coming up soon, this needs to change, or the league will head to the bargaining table without much negotiating muscle. (more…)

I just read something in an Orlando Sentinel blog that got me fired up. It’s a common mistake that college sportswriters make that they shouldn’t make, but almost all of them do. And it drives me bananas. And it reminded me of something else that college sportswriters do that drives me bananas. Here comes a rant.

What a weekend for the ACC! The league ended the regular season with four matchups against the SEC and won three of them to push the ACC’s record against the SEC to 6-4 on the season. The highlight of the weekend was Georgia Tech’s Fighting Paul Johnsons defeating Georgia’s Confused Mark Richts, 45-42. (Seriously, the UGA defenders are still wondering, where did Jonathan Dwyer and Roddy Jones go?) Here’s the final regular-season rundown for the once-maligned but now dominant ACC.

There was only one OOC game for the ACC in the past two weeks, but it was a tasty one: Boston College shut out Notre Dame 17-0 in Chestnut Hill last Saturday. Now the sky is falling in South Bend, ND coach Charlie Weis is talking about getting involved in offensive playcalling, etc., etc. The ACC is now 2-0 against ND, with this win and UNC’s 29-24 win on October 11th.

How ’bout them Blue Devils?? Duke continued the ACC’s out of conference tear, traveling down to Nashville and beating Vanderbilt for the first time in seven tries, 10-7. The win puts the Devils at 4-3 on the season, the first time they’ve won four games since 2003. The four wins matches their win total for the last four seasons (2004-2007).

A little late with the OOC update this week, but here we are. The ACC had a great week OOC, going 4-0 with wins over Notre Dame and ECU, along with a victory over UCF and a near-disaster avoided against Gardner-Webb. The league has been on a tear since hitting rock bottom early in the season, on the week of Sep. 6th.

There was very little action this week out of conference, with the Hokies knocking off Western Kentucky (which I’m classifying as a 1-AA win) and UNC taking down undefeated and 24th-ranked UConn by the Huskie-embarrassing score of 38-12. The ACC’s record against OOC opponents continues to improve, and the beating the league took in the preseason for being “weak” is a thing of the past.

This week’s OOC results were a mixed bag. The league went 2-2 against 1-A competition. The good news is that two key victories were notched (FSU over Colorado, VT over Nebraska), but the bad news is that one key loss was also turned in (Navy beat Wake Forest). This week’s ACC OOC blog also includes records against the other BCS conferences.

How wild is it that we are 3-1, but have been out gained by three of our four opponents? A whopping 14 flags bad for 121 in reverse (worth at least 7 points, possibly more), and 4 UNC Turnovers helped overcome being out gained by basically 40 yards and what could have been a season changing ankle injury to my boy Tmobile. UNC also was greatly reduced in their offensive efficacious by an even nastier ankle injury to Yates which triggered the insertion of young Paulus which saw UNC passing productivity (in terms of yards per attempt) drop by a stunning 330%!
