Yesterday the media released the 2008-09 All-ACC team, and today they announced Ty Lawson as the ACC Player of the Year.  Sounds like fun, so I think I’ll join in the action.

Hey, I guess it CAN’T go on forever! Here are a few quick notes on the NC State game — stats of note and general thoughts.

1.) Don’t get too upset about how VT doesn’t fare well against the Pack. It’s just matchups. Take Courtney Fells vs. Malcolm Delaney. Delaney didn’t play with much confidence offensively, and it’s because he spent the game being guarded by Fells, who is 4 inches taller and very athletic. Not many teams in the ACC can glove up Delaney like that.

Likewise, NC State is just generally bigger than the Hokies, and it’s hard for VT to guard the Pack.

I don’t believe in placing too much importance on any one basketball game, particularly one in late January that is followed by ten more conference games. But by winning on the road at #1 Wake Forest and at Miami in the last week, the 2008-09 Hokies have set themselves up well. You’re always looking for ways to take the next step with your program, and Seth Greenberg and his Hokies have a great opportunity tonight against #12 Clemson.

I was surprised that the five-year anniversary of the ACC’s decision to expand passed with so little fanfare. The ACC voted to invite Miami and Virginia Tech on June 24, 2003, and the schools both signed on the dotted line on July 1, 2003. I anticipated that the five-year anniversary of this event that shook the college sports landscape would receive more coverage and reflection, but retrospectives were few and far between.

NC returns more starters than anybody in the ACC, UNC dropped 6 games by 6 points or less; four of those games were a heartbreaking 3 points or less last year. In other words, UNC is the sleeper pick du jour for the Coastal Division. So let’s get some business out of the way up front, am I still picking UNC to upset us in week #4? Georgia Tech has undergone massive schematic turnover this off-season. That’s good news for us and anyone else who catches the Rambling Wreck in September. But what does Gah.Tech have back? How good is GT and how long does it take GT to find their game in 2008? Or is that really code for they do not find their game until 2009?

Another day is in the books, and the ACC field has been whittled from 12 to four. For the second season in a row, the Hokies have made the final four in the tournament. I loved the Hokies’ effort and performance today, but to be honest, I was very, very disappointed in Tech’s basketball fans. Not the ones who were there, but the many who didn’t show up.
