Your 4th Ranked winning B.C. Eye in the Sky part I

October 11th, 2009 by bourbonstreet

That’s how you rise up to #4 in the A.P. and USA Today poll’s folks!

Enter Sandman!

Enter Sandman!

Which basically puts us two games outta the 2010 MNC game in Pasadena as the Rose Bowl hosts this years D-1 title tilt.

Florida will likely get to play Alabama; thereby eliminating one of them. Be nice of Oklahoma could knock off Texas for us next weekend. That would give us nothing short of total mastery over our very own 2010 MNC destiny.

All we need to do is win out; then pick up those two other magical games.

Will that happen?

That remains to be seen. Though the 2009 54th ranked and rising fast Virginia Tech offense sure makes you feel froggy about our chances. Am I putting the horse before the Gah.Tech card and yelling “Giddy-Up” prematurely? Prolly. Have I not been this confident in a VT offense since the best days of MV2 and company in 2005? Definitely. Though the 2009 VT MNC odds will still be authored by the still somewhat nubile though improving VT stop-unit and VT Pride & Joy. And I dare you to find me a team that has improved this much on both sides of the ball since game#1.

All of that typed; lets take a look at a pretty close to perfected first 30 minutes of Hokie play vs. Boston College from Homecoming 2009.

1st Quarter 13:11 remaining:

right knee

right knee

I’m telling you what; we must have the greatest knee braces on the market. This time it is “Booooooooooooone” who is saved from the catastrophic roll-up as #47 clips him right on the button of the back of of “Booooooooone’s” right knee at an angle as Wang pancakes #47 to start the game. (big PIC link)

1st Quarter 11:04 remaining:
Take a look-see at our FGA and PAT teams newfangled negative splits. Zero-splits are heel-to-heel. Heel-to-inside-of-heel is a negative split and hopefully narrows any internal Gap of Hole for a kick blocking defender to hard charge right on through. That helps; however there is a trade off. The trade off being that it compress the Line of Scrimmage laterally or horizontally; creating a shorter distance to Waldron’s kick off the edge of the Hokie Kick protection unit. I’ll be interested to see if we use this next week vs. Gah.Tech or if this was simply in response to Boston College kick blocking techniques up the gut? (big PIC link)

1st Quarter 10:56 remaining:
‘Nother ugly play as #23 Matt Reidy gets pancaked by #40 of B.C. which rolls-up #44 Zack Lucket’s right-leg in a very ugly looking way. (big PIC link)

1st Quarter 10:13 remaining:
This is the classic Bait-look. Note where Jake, ‘Quell and Cody all are; now note where Kam and Morg’ are as well. How ‘about all freaking 11 Hokies in the Box; and then how about zero of them on the blitz. EPIC job by Bud Foster of disguising looks and coverages both when he did blitz and when he was actually only baiting B.C. (big PIC link)

1st Quarter 8:36 remaining:

Left Shoulder

Left Shoulder

Watch T-mobile sustain his first of two dings or dents on the day as he comes up with his non-throwing (left) shoulder smarting after this impact with #40 for B.C. on the Quarterback (Qb) scramble. (big PIC link)

1st Quarter 5:34 remaining:
A late hit by #86 on the T-mobile scramble and subsequent Sack? You be the judge; though the A.C.C. zebras have been very inconsistent when it comes to contact based fouls this season. TT is also a bit fortunate that B.C. did not try for the strip with the football so exposed in his right-hand on this play.

1st Quarter 4:50 remaining:
Check out TT’s new Mr. T Mohawk look after the sensational scramble to his left where he kept his eyes downfield for as long as he possibly could; which allowed him to finally fire a Shrike Missile at a wide-open Danny Coale in the back of the Endzone for 6. Little things like this showcase TT’s progression from somewhat raw thrower in the last two years to a much more polished and poised passer this season. (big PIC link)

1st Quarter 4:46 remaining:
B.C.’s Kickoff Return team took no prisoners as this time #28 ‘Zo Tweedy for VT gets annihilated on Kick coverage.

1st Quarter 3:26 remaining:
Watch Cody stick the B.C. Qb right in his sore-FSU rib’s. Shinskie was never the same after this play though this was a nice throw under pressure. (big PIC link)

WAR Hokie Respect!!! God Bless Mr. Herzlich.

2nd Quarter 14:01 remaining:
Wonderful block by the B.C. blindside-Offensive Tackle (Ot) on N.Brown on this play. Though N.Brown did have a outstanding day. His second great game of the year as N.Brown hustles his ass off and continues to up his play game-by game.

2nd Quarter 13:27 remaining:
Note the forward stance stagger and then the inflection in #52 ‘Quell River’s right leg which

Belly-Bump!

Belly-Bump!

keeps his body-weight as posterior as possible pre-snap. A dead to rights poker faced tell that he was Baiting; not Blitzing on the play. As the play ends watch “Taco” belly-bump #21 Virg’ about 4 yards through the freaking air in his post Sack celebration. WOW! . (big Tell PIC link)

2nd Quarter 9:59 remaining:
Real nice steal on the punt return crackback block by Reidy on the Hosely return that gained -10 yards the wrong way on the play. I expect Frank will lecture Hosley that you do not retreat when you have more than one coverage man right in your face. (big PIC link)

2nd Quarter 8:30 remaining:
A tipped blessing in disguise as it was a good thing that this TT throw got batted down at the line-of-scrimmage; as #45 and more importantly #25 were scissoring in-front of the intended throw to Danny Coale. This one would have been an easy INT for #25 had the TT throw made it to Coale as TT never saw #25 as he progressed after a pump-fake to not his primary, nor his secondary, but rather to his tertiary read which was Mr. Coale. This was TT’s only un-good throw on the day.

2nd Quarter 8:15 remaining:
Watch the nervy happy-feet from Shinskie as he never gets his body set to throw. Hence his pass lacked any and all velocity and that allowed the Roc’ to slip right in front of a suspect Sideline Out pattern from the Eagles as they were only on their own 20 yard line which gave the Roc’ a short return for 6. Nice Zone-Blitz Coverage call by Bud Foster as Shinskie effectively threw into short double-coverage with #6 J.Worilds shadowing the Flat.

2nd Quarter 5:34 remaining:
#88 Smitty is totally submarined over the pile-up after the awful whiff of a block by DeChris on the right-side of this negative yardage carry by R.Will.

2nd Quarter 3:29 remaining:
Note that the intended B.C. Wide Receiver (Wr) #11 is not even looking for the ball on this lazy

Bad throw 1o1

Bad throw 1o1

wounded duck of a throw from Shinskie to Virg’. This is either the wrong Route run by#11 or a misread by the B.C. Qb Shinskie. (big PIC link)

2nd Quarter 1:52 remaining:
Poor Wilson got pummeled all day long. This time it is #34 who detonates on our #4. This has been a trend since the Nebraska game and it leaves one wondering if Wilson is suffering from a real or perceived rep’ for being soft in the A.C.C. scouting community? #34 hit Wilson so hard in fact that it was #34 who had to leave the game!

Longfield Management (Lo.FM)®:

Lo.Fm Analysis:
Talk about your lack of composure. This Boston College effort on Longfields was worse than turning UKSJ loose in the cat-house with a 100% chance of showers and a pocket stuffed full of

You can now see some of what Ive seen outta TT behind the scenes.

You can now see some of what I've seen outta TT behind the scenes.

3oo one-dollar bills! Boston College simply unraveled right before our eyes like a $10 suit brought outta mothballs and imported from the Salvation Navy. Seriously, the next composure I see outta B.C. will be their first. Not only that … we/VT broke our record for the fewest Lo.FM’s we’ve ever faced; as our beloved Hokies only encountered 12 Lo.FM’s on the day. To take that a step further we successfully negotiated 25% of them including an extremely rare Touchdown on such when T-mobile scrambled to buy more throwing time then nailed Danny Coale for 6 points on a 3rd and 19 at the 4:50 minute mark of Quarter number one. 33% of our Lo.FM’s were Swiss or neutral in that they did us no real harm even if they were not great in and of themselves. That’s a nifty 58% of our Lo.FM’s that really were not all that bad. Finally do note that Tyrod only accounted for 1/6th or 16% of our Lo.FM plays. In other words the VT offense ran like a finely tuned Indy car with four new tires on a perfectly manicured track.

B.C. on the other hand racked up an astounding 29 Lo.FM’s that resulted in 3 penalties, and 1 INT with the first ever wasted Timeout during a long down and distance scenario.

Can you say stomping the living guts outta the Panic-Button?

Or how ’bout the RSN Kursk beaching herself on 3-Mile Island as the Flying Eagles totally melted-down when the chain-gang set the sticks against them. Not exactly a sage and well-seasoned 25 year old day for the team from Chestnut Hill. Bud Foster’s mixing of real-live Blitzes and entrapment based Baits really got deep into both of the Boston College Qb’s head’s. Their heads were spinning from the get go and one has to wonder if they had a bad O&M case of the spins once their heads hit their respective pillow’s back up in Massachusetts Saturday night?

This was something of a return to the future for Coach Bud Foster as he either blitzed or Baited like it was the 2000 season all over again. The difference being two-fold. Not only did Bud Bait the B.C. Qb’s about half the time, he now enjoys 4 or 5 lock-down quality Defensive Back’s and vastly greater athleticism, and or gridiron I.Q. out of his second-layer (or Linebackers). This affords Bud the ability to take so many risks while leveraging the given plays’ outcome against the return on investing so heavily in so much hind-7 (Lb’s and Secondary) lateral speed.

The 2009 VT offense is...........???

1st Half high-lights:

  • Very physically tough effort out of Bud Foster’s stop-unit that bordered on being outright
    Frank was all smiles.

    Frank was all smiles.

mean at times. I saw numerous hits by us/VT right at the echo of the whistle that might have been called if we were the Visitor. We hit anything and everything that was in a white uniform for B.C. Head, upper-body, legs, ankles. Numerous Hokies went diving in at the last possible second to try to punish B.C. You gotta love it when a team goes nuclear and plays atomic football like that.

  • Boston College’s tacking was pitiful. R.Will had metric tons of Yardage After Contact (YAC) as B.C. arm-tackled all day long.
  • R.Will missed two wide freaking open holes with less than great lateral vision that might have very well made the first half tally 41-zip or worse.
  • TT’s play-fakes after VT running play hand-offs are being at least attended to by one or more defenders, if not flat out pursued by same after T-mobile has gained 1138 yards rushing coming into this year. i.e. other teams are spying just a little too much on TT. This is opening up our opposite side runs by freezing the enemy’s second-layer (or Linebackers) for at least the proverbial split-second.
  • I really enjoyed the assortment of Formations from Coach Stiney on this day. That is mixing things up the right way as we still ran our Outside-Zone and Zone-Stretch base plays from whatever formation we broke the huddle with. This helped immobilize the B.C. defense with a visual overload of analysis of paralysis.
  • My sources on the B.C. sidelines described the Flying Eagles as “dead” to me. They said they did not even see a single white uniformed baller smile one time. One has to wonder just why B.C. was such a carpenters dream and so very emotionally flat for such a huge intra-conference match-up?

I’ll be back in a day or three with your winning Boston College woodshed stylized Eye in the Sky part II.

LETS GO!

HOKIES!
